Unpacking a Nintendo 3DS
I finally got my hands on a Nintendo 3DS the other day and I have to see I was very impressed with it. It ticked all the boxes: nice screen size and fits comfortably in the hands.
Unfortunately I had no games carts to play with and I was really yearning for a go at Super Street Fighter 4. However what comes in the box is excellent in itself.
The Box
Face Raiders
I’d heard a lot about Face Raiders and that it was a lot of fun, but I wasn’t sure what to expect.
First thing you need to do is to take a photo of your face using the front facing camera. Once that was done the image is automatically cropped and added to an avatar. I was given a viking helmet of some kind.
The levels are composed using the back camera which is displaying a video of your surroundings. Then out of know where your attacked by your avatar and you need to shoot it to earn points, whilst along the way rescuing faces of other avatars that are in your immediate area or that are saved onto your DS.
This is not me by the way.

This resulted in a lot of spinning around my chair trying to attack enemies coming at me from all angles. I had a lot of room to maneuver. But I can see people struggling with this on public transport.
Augmented Reality & AR Games
Opening the box for the first time I noticed a few cards. I had no idea what they were so I parked them to one side. The cards. The cards are for use with AR Games. You place a card on a flat surface, and point the 3DS at it and a point the rear camera it and the game comes alive using the background image.
I absolutely loved this, although I was having difficulty keeping he 3DS camera pointed to the card through fits of excitement.

In Summary
The 3DS is looking worth the £200 price tag, games are backwards compatible with existing DS and DSi. Plus they’ll be a whole back catalogue of games you’ll be able to download from Nintendo. And there’s new Zelda, Star Fox and Resident Evil to look forward too.
