Reading list & e-readers
World Book Day is on the 4th march 2010 and it’s the largest annual celebration of books and reading across the UK and Ireland. This year a new initiative ‘Read to a Million Kids‘, sponsored by Renaissance Learning is being launched. The eleven £1GBP Book stories, read by their authors or actors, will be broadcast online during World Book Day. Available exclusively to schools and libraries in the first instance, and supplemented with a fun quiz about the reading.

Here is a nice picture of some books:

So on the back of this research I made my way around Laskys Towers to find out what our current crop of boys and girls would recommend as their top 5 books, and what they are reading right now.
Sadly the response was slightly underwhelming and I have to assume everyone was very busy and not simply ignoring me at the time (but for those that did respond, thank you).
Anyway from what I received back, here is our top 5 books of all time:
- To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
- American Psycho by Brett Easton Ellis
- The Rum Diary by Hunter S. Thompson
- The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger
- George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl
We are currently reading:
- Live and Let Die by Ian Flemming
- Catch 22 by Joseph Heller
- The Lovley Bones by Alice Sebold
- Vampire Diaries: The Struggle by L.J. Smith
If this blog entry has got you in the mood to read some or all of the books mentioned, have you considered using an e-reader?
An e-book reader, also called an e-book device or e-reader, is an electronic device that is designed primarily for the purpose of reading digital books and periodicals and uses e-ink technology to display content to readers. The main advantages of these devices are portability, readability of their screens in bright sunlight, and long battery life. Any Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) capable of displaying text on a screen is also capable of being an e-book reader, but without the advantages of an electronic ink display.
One the best things about using an e-reader is that you can store 100′s of books on the same device – this is great for when you are travelling or when space is at a premium. Imagine all your favourite and want-to-read book list all together in the same space as a single book.
To celebrate World Book Day the Laskys store has secured an array of Sony eReaders to get you [back into] reading in true 21st century style. See our Sony e-reader list here: http://bit.ly/bncJi2

We’d like to hear from you what your favourite books are and what you are currently reading. We’d also really like to know your thoughts on whether it’s nicer to read books in paper or digital format, and what you think of e-readers in general: Should we sell them? If so which? Is there anything you need to know more about before you consider a purchase? – tell us in the comments section below.
